How To Add A Name to House Title

Isn’t it so exciting to get married?? To make the commitment to spend the rest of your lives together! But then reality sets in and you realize how much paperwork is involved when you combine two lives. Changing government documents, bank accounts, addresses, and titles on vehicles and property.

I have had a few people ask me how to add a spouse to the title on a house. When one spouse comes into the marriage with a house in his/her name only, the process for adding another name is a little more complicated than just a form. Technically the house is transferred from one name only, to both names, and this is done by way of quit claim deed. The deed is then filed with the town hall, and a form is submitted to the state. Don’t worry, you don’t pay taxes on this transfer the way you would with any other title transfer. The state realizes that this is just a formality to add a spouse’s name.

If you need assistance adding your spouse’s name to your house, contact an attorney.
